I was recently cruising the web and came across legit Holga lens’ (from Holga) that fit onto Canon/Nikon DSLR cameras. Once I saw the price ($25), I pounced on it.
I casually shot the above photos over the last day and a half trying out the lens.
In a nutshell, it’s a plastic piece of junk that can be fun and it definitely gives you a “Holga-like” look. Soft focus, vignette and vintage-y. If you are fan of this and aren’t that concerned about using actual film, than I think you will be stoked. Overall, it will be cool to have this lens in the arsenal, but I will only really use it if I will have the time needed to mess with it.
A few things you should know:
You will be in manual mode using this lens, which means you will have to fiddle with shutter speed to get a good exposure, or one that you are happy with. I easily took about 3-4 photos of the pics above trying to dial it in. Also, from my experience so far, the in-camera exposure meter is not the answer to your problems.
The lens is fixed at F.8, so it’s not that good in low light unless you are using a tripod. All the photos above were all shot mid to late day with enough light. I would go as far as saying that you need plenty of light to use this lens.
That’s all that I can really think of. I know it’s kind of ironic to put such a cheap lens on an expensive camera body to produce “downgraded” images, but it does give you a certain look. It’s not bad for what it is. If you have a Canon/Nikon DSLR, enjoy the look of Holga pictures, wish to save some money on film and have 25 bucks, than check out this lens.
